There are two main roads on Rarotonga - you can circle the island on the Ara Tapu coastal sealed road, through the villages and past the beaches; or you can take the older inland road, which winds through fields of taro, pawpaw, bananas and local farmlands.

The motor scooter is a popular, fun way to see the sights, however bikes, cars and jeeps can be rented as well from various agencies. Exploring the island by motor cycle is one of those simple yet stunning Rarotonga experiences that make this destination different. Stop for a swim, shop at the small craft stores dotted around the island or call into a café for a Cool drink and a bite to eat – the choice is yours!

The "Island Bus" offers a convenient low cost method of transport, operating regular schedules around the island (in both directions). It will pick you up and set you down anywhere on request.

For visitors wishing to explore the interior on foot there is a guided cross-island walk led by the inimitable Pa. For the less energetic there is a three-hour four-wheel drive safari which takes one through the mountains and into the rain forests. Aerial scenery can be enjoyed with a 20 minute scenic flight from the airport.
